We need leaders, not first impressionists

The next person you meet might be the one that changes your life, business and personal – one of the best pieces of advice I heard. Another piece of advice I value is, don’t take anything personal. A third great piece of advice I heard is, I cannot be held responsible for your reaction/behaviour.

I am not impressed by people. As a human being I know that I could be influenced by first impressions, so I work every day at not getting influenced by first impressions. The first impressions I actively look for from a business owner is not their personal looks, their clothes, office, what’s on their walls, and their title.

It is based on how they speak and respond to all people.

I believe respect must be given by default immediately. Then only can it be kept, built, or lost.

Our business is B2B and involves spending time with business owners and leaders, and their senior management.

Time is finite so I choose whom I want to spend my time with. I know exactly what type of business owner I want to deal with, and which industries I want to deal with, no compromise.

When I or my staff approach you, we already know we want to spend time with your business. The next step is to determine whether we want to spend our time with you as the owner.

This week I had a situation where I couldn’t get to a Zoom meeting due to circumstances beyond any one’s control.

Someone from my office called that business owner to apologise and arrange for another meeting.

The way that business owner responded determined whether I want to spend my time with him. The answer is no.

Being a business owner or a CEO does not make you a leader. And we need leaders today probably more than ever.

And as business leaders we are as much known for the company we keep as the company we don’t keep.

Remember, no matter your LinkedIn photos, profile content, and what you have on your website; when you open your mouth those things mean nothing.
