Where or when do intelligence and culture meet? A question I often ponder. More so when I am in traffic, waiting in a line, hearing people talking about things they don’t know about, and politics & politicians.
Intelligence – “the ability to derive information, learn from experience, adapt to the environment, understand, and correctly utilize thought and reason”.
Culture – “the sum total of the learned behavior of a group of people that are generally considered to be the tradition of that people and are transmitted from generation to generation”.
The word “learn” appears in both definitions.
Many of the online definitions for learn contains – “to gain knowledge or skill by studying, from experience”. From experience…
Stupid – “showing a total lack of good sense or good judgment”.
Is it possible to get/have good sense or good judgment, without learning from experience…?
At what point do people realise that their behaviour – what they say and do – is stupid?
And at what point do people learn that we build a culture of stupid? Children see, and they do. And so do adults…
First scenario –
At an intersection, waiting to turn right. The light is red for right turn, but green for straight. A person thinks they have the right to ignore the red light for those turning right, and drives through a red light.
Are they stupid?
Second scenario –
Standing in line at your local grocery shop. A person jumps the line, pushes in front of you, but hates it when it happens to them.
Are they stupid?
Third scenario –
You believe you have the right to comment, give your unasked-for opinion about any and everything, with authority. And then you criticise others when they do what you do.
Are you stupid?
Scenario four –
When will people realise that politicians lie to get a payslip, and to survive? There are very few politicians that care about you and me. Just look at the behaviour of the politicians that go against what they said about coalitions before the last elections.
When you vote for the same party that still has not delivered on their promises, are you stupid?
When you break rules, any rules, and no there are no small and big rules, you are the same as all those whom you blame and point fingers at for being corrupt.
Are you stupid?
Is it not time we learn from our experiences and be less stupid?
Or are we too stupid to do that?
One way of learning, and being less stupid is to surround yourself with people that will hold you accountable for your behaviour.
Who’s in your room, at your table to hold you accountable?
