I together with my two sisters and brother, were raised by a single mother. My dad walked out on us when I was 13 and my brother not a year old at the time. My mom had no formal education, she didn’t even finish school, and started as a “cashier” at the nearest Pick n Pay. We had no car, so she walked. My mom passed away before her 50th birthday. Nothing special about the above as millions of South African women and children experience this daily.
Yesterday we “celebrated” Women’s Day in South Africa.
In one of the newspapers this was the heading of an article (my translation from Afrikaans), “More women than men suffer from bad debt – this is why”.
“The median difference between men’s and women’s compensation in the country is between 23% and 35%, according to the latest available data from 2021.”
Business Owners & Leaders, are you guilty of this abuse of women?
There is no legitimate reason to discriminate against women who do the same job as men.
Business Owners & Leaders, men and women, you have a responsibility to the youth of this country to ensure that you treat their mothers fairly, at all times.
To the women and mothers of our beautiful country, I see you, I recognise you.
I salute you.
